Forestry Education in Thailand

We are the only Forestry school in Thailand !

Faculty of Forestry, Kasetsart University, is the only academic forestry school in Thailand. It began as a forestry school in 1936 at Phrae in Northern Thailand. In 1954 the college moved to its present site at Bangkok. The Faculty, with 63 academic staff, offers a four course leading to the degree Bachelor of Science in Forestry with a choice of majoring in Forest Resources, Forest Products, or Social Forestry. Post-graduate courses, leading to Master of Science, are offered in the fields of Forest Management, Forest Biology, Forest Products, Silvilculture and Watershed Management, and to a Ph.D. degree in Forest Science.

Forestry Administration in Thailand

Most of forest lands in Thailand are governed by the Royal Forest Department, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives. Royal Forest Department (RFD) was established on 18 September 1896 by HM King Rama V. Its duty is to manage forestry in Thailand on sustainable basis. RFD reached its 1st centenial in September 18, 1996.

According to the National Forest Policy, the target forest area of Thailand are aimed at 40 % of the country (conserved forest, 25 %) and commercial forest, 15 %.

Since January 16, 1989, almost the logging operations in the natural forest has been stopped. Only some areas in the demontration forest are allowed under selection in combination with improvement felling.
